It's interesting how frequently people underestimate the non-programming skills of engineer. There are many engineers who lack skills beyond software engineering, but there are those who have actively cultivated other skills that make them effective builders, not just programmers. It's hard to explain that and it's hard to demonstrate that since those opportunities to show those skills are few and far between. In an era of layoffs and converging roles, leaders should be pushing to find those engineers that have those skills. They should be throwing those opportunities to them to see who can swim in a world of responsibility carcinisation. But I haven't seen that in my current role and I haven't seen it in the industry at large. Unfortunate.
